Pets are renowned for reducing stress. Over recent years many studies have proven pets reduce stress. When you spend time with a cat, your production of serotonin, a chemical that boosts feelings of well-being, goes up, and your cortisol levels go down.
In fact, a recent study with university students as subjects found that petting cats and dogs for 10 minutes decreased the amount of cortisol (a stress hormone) in the students saliva. These findings are consistent with the notion that interacting with cats and dogs decreases stress.
